{"id":792,"date":"2022-01-18T23:31:06","date_gmt":"2022-01-18T23:31:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pearl-candac.ca\/website\/?page_id=792"},"modified":"2022-09-29T14:51:57","modified_gmt":"2022-09-29T14:51:57","slug":"pearl-weather-station-suite","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.pearl-candac.ca\/website\/index.php\/instrumentation\/pearl-weather-station-suite\/","title":{"rendered":"PEARL Weather Station Suite"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>For more information about PEARL Weather Station Suite and data, please, contact CANDAC\/PEARL site manager <\/em><\/strong><a href=\"mailto:pierre.fogal@utoronto.ca\"><strong><em>Dr. Pierre Fogal<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surface weather observations have always been a part of the PEARL measurement program since the beginning.&nbsp; Monitoring of ambient air temperature, atmospheric pressure, wind speed and direction provides critical information about current weather conditions at PEARL and is useful for climate studies in the High Arctic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, PEARL scientists and staff rely on the data from the PEARL weather monitoring instruments and systems to make sure all travel and field operations can be carried out safely.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Instrument Description<\/em><\/strong><br>At PEARL, surface weather observations are conducted at three locations.\u00a0<br><br>The first location is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pearl-candac.ca\/website\/index.php\/facilities\/#Ridge-Lab\">PEARL Ridge Lab<\/a> site at 610 m a.s.l. (see Fig. 1).\u00a0 On the PEARL Ridge Lab the primary weather station (PEARL Weather Station, PWS) consists of a Vaisala ultra-sonic anemometer, Campbell Scientific temperature and humidity sensors and a Setra high precision barometer.\u00a0 The data is recorded using a Campbell Scientific data logger. \u00a0Also present is a Vaisala WXT-520 (Penthouse Weather Station, PHWS).<br><br>Another Vaisala WXT-520 weather transmitter is installed at the Safehut (Safehut Weather Station, SHWS), a small container size building constructed ~80 m away from the PEARL Ridge Lab for the personnel evacuation purposes in case of emergency at the main lab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pearl-candac.ca\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/PEARL_weather_station_suite_figure_1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-793\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pearl-candac.ca\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/PEARL_weather_station_suite_figure_1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.pearl-candac.ca\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/PEARL_weather_station_suite_figure_1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pearl-candac.ca\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/PEARL_weather_station_suite_figure_1-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.pearl-candac.ca\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/PEARL_weather_station_suite_figure_1-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.pearl-candac.ca\/website\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/PEARL_weather_station_suite_figure_1-2048x1152.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><br><strong>Figure 1. &nbsp;Aerial photo of the PEARL Ridge Lab site: SHWS \u2013 Safehut Weather Station, PHWS \u2013 Penthosue Weather Station, PWS \u2013 PEARL Weather Station.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A Vaisala WXT-510 is located at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pearl-candac.ca\/website\/index.php\/facilities\/#0PAL\">\u00d8PAL<\/a> at 10 m a.s.l. and ~160 m north of the Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) Eureka Weather Station main facility complex (see Fig. 2) to provide wind speed information to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pearl-candac.ca\/website\/index.php\/instrumentation\/rayleigh-mie-raman-lidar\/\">CANDAC Rayleigh-Mie-Raman Lidar<\/a> operator.&nbsp;
